World Cup: Switzerland through despite penalty drama against Costa Rica

Switzerland drew with a spirited Costa Rica side in their final group game to progress to the knockout stages as runners-up in Group E.

Dzemaili set the Swiss on their way with a goal in the first half, but Costa Rica didn’t make life easy for their European opponents and drew level when Kendall Watson prodded home in the second half.

The score-line in the Brazil versus Serbia match elsewhere in Group E meant that Switzerland were going through even with the draw, but it appeared as if Vladimir Petkovic’s side had grabbed the win when Josip Drmic scored in the 88th minute.

But there was to be late drama with two penalty incidents, the first of which was overturned through VAR before the second was dispatched by Bryan Ruiz off the back of the unfortunate Swiss goalkeeper.
