There are still no new signings to report at Tottenham Hotspur, but the club have continued to renew the contracts of some of their most important current players.
The latest player to sign a new deal only just returned to Hotspur Way after his post-World Cup vacation. The club announced today that Son Heung-Min has agreed to a new contract that will last until 2023.
Son is an incredible footballer, but he also has some really impressive dental hygiene. That radiant smile could probably power the new stadium by itself.
Son has been a revelation since joining Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. The 26-year-old has scored 47 goals in 139 appearances for Tottenham, including 30 goals in the Premier League. Not only has Son made some key contributions in the PL and the Champions League, but he’s also the most popular player in the dressing room. Locking him up for a few more years is a great bit of business.
The early part of this coming campaign will be a bit disjointed for Son, as he is expected to miss time at the beginning of the season to play for South Korea at the Asian Games in Indonesia. He will be with the squad for the Newcastle match before leaving to join up with his national team.Heung-Min Son signs a new five-year contract.
Spurs will miss him later in August, and possibly in September, but there’s no doubt he will be an important member of the squad when he comes back from international duty. The soccer part of the tournament in Indonesia will run from August 14th until September 1st.
Those Asian Games are crucial for Son, and now for Tottenham too. If the South Koreans win gold then they will be exempt from military service in their homeland. If they don’t, then that conscription is still looming in the future. It would probably come into effect before 2023, but there could also be a clause in this new contract that deals with that issue.
Hopefully that can all be avoided. Son is a quality player and a quality person. He’s the kind of footballer who Spurs should want to keep around for a long while. This five-year-contract is proof that Mauricio Pochettino feels the same way.
Here’s to many more goals, and many more smiles, from the best Asian player on earth
